Wikipedia: The University of Belgrade is the oldest and most important institution of higher education in Serbia still in function (preceded by the Teacher's Academy in Sombor, Habsburg Empire 1787). In addition, it is one of the oldest universities in the Balkans. Founded in 1808 as the Great Academy in revolutionary Serbia, by 1838 it merged with the Kragujevac-based Lycee into a single university.
