Wikipedia: A qanāt (Iran, Syria and Jordan), kārīz (or kārēz from Persian: كاريز, kahan, khettara; galeria; falaj; Kahn or foggara/fughara is a water management system used to provide a reliable supply of water to human settlements and for irrigation in hot, arid and semi-arid climates. Alternative terms for Qanats in Asia and North Africa are kakuriz, chin-avulz, and mayun. Common variant spellings/transliterations of qanat in English include kanat, khanat, kunut, kona, konait, ghanat, ghundat.
