Wikipedia: An internal passport is an identity document that can be compared to an identity card used in some countries to control the internal movement and residence of people. Countries that currently have internal passports include Russia, Ukraine, China and North Korea. In the past, internal passports were used by Imperial Russia, the Confederate States of America, the Soviet Union, the Ottoman Empire and during the apartheid era in South Africa.
