Wikipedia: The Military Frontier was a borderland of Habsburg Austria and later the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, which acted as the cordon sanitaire against Turkish incursions from the Ottoman Empire. From the Middle Ages, it included the Croatian Military Frontier, and from the late 17th century until the 19th century, the Slavonian, Banat, and Transylvanian Military Frontiers.
