Wikipedia: The Kingdom of England was, from 927 to 1707, a sovereign state and island country to the northwest of continental Europe. At its height, the Kingdom of England spanned the southern two-thirds of the island of Great Britain and several smaller outlying islands—what is today the legal unit of England and Wales. It had a land border with the Kingdom of Scotland to the north, and its capital and chief royal residence was Winchester, but Westminster and Gloucester were accorded almost equal status—with Westminster gradually gaining preference.
